Beth H. McMasters

Beth McMasters is a Louisville native and founding shareholder and partner of McMasters Keith.

Her practice includes medical malpractice defense, professional liability defense, general insurance defense, and product liability defense. Beth represents doctors, hospitals, long term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, healthcare corporations, health insurance companies, staffing agencies and professional organizations in administrative and litigation matters throughout Kentucky. She provides legal counsel regarding a full range of hospital and healthcare related legal issues for hospital corporations, nursing homes and physician practices. She also serves as a frequent invited speaker for hospital and physician groups as well as for drug and medical device companies to local and national groups. She taught a course on Medical Liability at the University of Louisville School of Law and has been an invited speaker for groups of law, nursing, allied health, and medical students and residents on innumerable occasions. The range of topics is broad, being tailored to each group’s needs and requests.

Beth is a graduate of Bellarmine University (B.S., 1987, Nursing) and the University of Louisville School of Law (J.D., 1994). Beth’s experience as a registered nurse includes adult intensive care and adult and pediatric post- anesthesia care. After obtaining her J.D., Beth spent two years with a firm in Houston, Texas prior to returning to Louisville. In 1996, she practiced as an associate attorney (1996-2001) and partner (2001-2004) for O’Bryan Brown & Toner, LLC of Louisville, Kentucky. In 2004, Beth joined Thompson, Miller & Simpson, PLC as a partner with expertise in medical malpractice defense, insurance coverage, and product liability defense. In December 2009, She formed McMasters Keith Butler, Inc., with Karen Keith and Ashley Butler. She has continued her busy litigation practice, enjoying multiple trial victories throughout her years of practice.

Beth serves as a member of the Defense Research Institute, and is a member of the Kentucky Hospital Association. She previously served as a Barrister in the Louis D. Brandeis American Inns of Court (2000-2002). Beth has been selected by her peers as a top lawyer in medical liability defense as published in Louisville Magazine, Kentucky Monthly and Super Lawyers for the past several years. She is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, the only entity accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) to certify attorneys as specialists in the areas of medical malpractice and legal malpractice law. The ABPLA is comprised of some of the most experienced and successful Professional Liability Attorneys in the country, and have extensive training and knowledge in the areas of legal and medical malpractice. All Diplomates adhere to the principles set forth by the ABPLA and must pass a stringent peer review process as well as a written examination and make a certifying statement annually attesting to their qualifications to assure the public is provided with the proper tools in which to evaluate an attorney.

She is co-author of "Hospital Liability and Medical Malpractice Kentucky Health Law" chapter, UK CLE, 5th edition (2009) and co-author of "Adverse Peer Review – Damage Control in the Malpractice Setting," For the Defense, (Feb. 2000). She also co-authored a chapter in Reoperative Abdominal Surgery (2014).

Beth is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association and the Louisville Bar Association and is admitted to practice in the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky.
